If the sound of the bass isn't right to you, you can try. No need really unless the strings are old.
Personally, I would - but I've experimented with lots of strings and have found some I really like.
Generally, flatwound strings sound darker but feel smooth, nickle rounds are a bit rougher and have more string noise but also more clarity, and stainless steel strings are usually the roughest feeling but also the brightest and growliest. If you're going to experiment, have fun!
