Silly prices for more than 4 string pack ....

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought some new strings for my 5-string (I always use Ernie Ball because I like the clarity).

Price for 4-pack : £18.99
Price for 5-pack : £27.99!!!!!

That's £9 extra for ONE STRING! ... almost 50% of the cost of an entire 4-pack, for ONE 'B' string!

Unfortunately I was desperate so I had to buy them, but I felt just a tiny-wee bit ripped off. just a 'tad'.

Anyone got a good source for either whole packs of strings, or single Ernie Ball 'B' strings (125 gauge pref, but 130's fine)??

Have you contemplated the size of a B string and considered the amount of metal in it vs a high G string? Probably IS almost 50% of the total set.

Mmmmm not convinced that adds up. Here's the sizes in a super slinky 5 -pack:
  1. 40
  2. 60
  3. 75
  4. 95
  5. 125
... if I follow your logic: (4 strings) 40+60+75+95 = 270

125 is 46% of that ... er ... bummer!!! I think I just proved you right - LOL!!

... maybe it's time to buy a 4-string bass ...

don't forget the the B has an extra winding, so that's more time and trouble to produce. The B string may actually be the best value in the pack

and don't forget the amount of material needed depends on the square of the radius! So that B string is probably 40% of the total mass of the 5-string set

Yah, it really depends on the name, the type and the style of string. You CAN get 6 string sets cheaply - but given that you're in Europe, I imagine that may be part of the problem. The biggest rip-offs tend to be LaBella strings when it comes to extended range sets...

I found the Ken Smith Burners to be a good value - long lasting and cheap.

Using the square of thickness to properly estimate the amount of metal in each string: (4 strings) 40^2+60^2+75^2+95^2 = 19850

125^2 = 15625 which is 79% of that.

Of course, this is a crazy way to look at string pricing. I play a 6-er, and i believe that the C-string is the least "value" in terms of cash-for-metal.
