SIT or Others for More Tension on 34 Inch Scale Five String?

Sign in to disble this ad
As I make more of an effort to acclimate to a 34 inch scale RV5 (as opposed to playing a four string), I find I'd like more tension than I'm getting with Sadowsky SS -- especially on the bottom two strings.

By accident, I previously ran across a post in another TB forum where someone commented that they had changed to a SIT string to accomplish this. The poster didn't mention which SIT string. Now I can't even find that thread with searching! So who wants to guess which SIT string might be used for this application?

Other recommendations are welcome too. FWIW, I prefer nickels on fours and smoother is usually better for me. Ideally, I'd like to do this without sacrificing definition on the B string. In searching this forum, I've found some other posts that suggest these other strings as possibilities:
  • Rotosound Swing Bass (but QC is questionable?)
  • GHS Boomers
  • Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky
  • thicker gauge D’addario XL’s
If you've changed strings to get more tension on your 34 inch scale five string, let me know what works for you.

The medium guage sadowsky stainless strings are almost the highest tension strings I've ever used, so you're going to need something serious. D'addarrio pro steels are stiffer, but I had very poor results with them on an RV5. I guess what you'll be looking for is a .135, .110, .90, .70, .50 set or something like that. Might need to be a custom order.

Raising the action slightly could also do the trick.

I've tried rotos, slinkys, boomers, and XLs and all of them feel less stiff than sadowsky stainless in like guages. I think I even tried them all on my RV5 and decided the sadowsky strings were hard or impossible to beat.

Is this documented somewhere, or supposition? I'm always hunting for published string data, but have none for SIT.

DRs are also a high tension string. I play the Low Riders and dig 'em. They are worth a shot!

No... Just my opinion from trying many different strings. Try a set
they're relatively cheap at $19.01 and tell me what you think.
