My guess would be higher gauge/tighter strings, because with looser ones it's harder to give that nice slap sound in my opinion.

Thumbs up

I use DR High Beams (45-65-80-100) and they sound great!!!
Marcus Miller uses them too, but 105-45!

It's easier to show off slap chops with a lighter gauge. For slapping, I'd prefer a 40-60-80-100 set. IMO looser feel = more comfy slap/pop, at least to some extent.

I recently made a change of strings, to a tighter kind and higher gague, and slapping is way harder now than before. But now my fingerstyle is right where I want it...
