Slapping, harmonics, and string life.

Before I started using techniques other than fingerstyle, my strings lasted me awhile. Obviously, slapping reduced the life of them. And, when I really got into harmonics on my fretless, the strings didn't last long at all. Is there a brand of strings anyone would recommend that can take a lot of slapping and harmonic abuse? If so, do they come in roundwound and flatwounds?

Dean Markley Blue Steels (stainless steel roundwound). They seem to actually get better with age. Stay bright for a really long time and have a fantastic growly tone.

off topic, but i didn't know harmonics wear out your strings any faster than finger style?

Honestly, I didn't know it, either. But, I started playing the high harmonics on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd "frets" (I play fretless). You have to pluck pretty hard to get them to ring out the right way, and that's what shortened the life. I'm trying to find a string that can take MUCH abuse. Rotosounds and D' Addario strings let me down. I used to love Rotosounds...

Well, my fretless bass really allows me to do harmonics wherever the I want. I don't settle for certain "frets." I just play them wherever they sound decent.

While the blue steels are good I prefer the sr2000's. I think 6 string sets are about US $30.

moopants, have you tried any of the DR stainless steel sets (Lo-Riders, Hi- Beams, Fat-Beams)? I play four string so I have no experience with their Low B or High C strings but IMO the four string sets are the best stainless steel sets available. Sounds like the Hi-Beams might be what you are looking for since you want brightness but the Lo-Riders and Fat-Beams are very bright as well.

No, I haven't, but I've heard many good things about them.
Do they make good flatwound sets? I need rounwounds for the 6 string, and flats for the fretless. I'm using a string brand called "Carl (SOMETHING I FORGOT)", and they're REALLY nice flats, but I can't remember the name! Ahhh

hmm, DR...I dont know

i've been trying all of the DR stings for a few months now and although i really like them brand new i find that they wear out and start sounding dull, as well as lose their ability to vibrate properly after 3-4 shows tops. i play pretty abusive so i'm a little picky about strings that die quickly. i will add that although they die after just a few shows they do last longer than most other strings that i've bought. i'm going to try soaking mine in denatured alcohol and see if that brings them back to life. the other thing too is that they wear unevenly between strings although with any of these issues i'm not counting out my technique as the major culprit.
i want to try the dean markley strings next.
i wish elixirs had more balls to em then they would be a little more worth the price perhaps....or maybe not.
