Slapping Rotosound 77's

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got a set put on my P bass. I didn't know what to expect when it came to slap because I haven't heard good things about slap and flats going together, but "WOW" is all I can say. I've gone through quite a few types of strings, but never have I heard a sound quite like this. Maybe I'm crazy, but these strings sound absolutely amazing slapped. Has anyone else tried these strings or another flatwound and actually PREFERRED it over rounds?

I love these strings on my MIM J. For me, this combo is a perfect blend of bark and burp.

Slapping can be done on any strings, most any bass. Some might be "better suited", but a good slapper could do it with flats. And the Roto 77 ate amazing sounding flats, so I am glad they work for you, even for slapping.

Strings are as versatile as their player. Same with bass and supposed "one trick pony" gear. It's up to the magician how many rabbits he can pull out of his hat (some hats might be easier to work with, but still, the rabbits don't jump off the hat on their own.)

I agree, they are very bright flats and very slappable. I like their tension.

I've played duller sounding rounds actually...

Some people get scared about their supposed super brightness. 3 weeks after installing my short scale set, they have mellowed out a bit, but still retain a great flatwound tone that is never dull, but also unmistakably a flatwound sound. These are not harsh sounding at all, they just offer a big, detailed tone. No roundwound tone here, but certainly brighter than even the Chromes, which is why the OP enjoys using them for slapping.

I love their tone, they sound like only they can. Good or bad, it's up to you. Amazing, IMHO.

The slap tone alone is what really gets me. Then with a pick, it just growls on my P-bass... I'm never using another set of strings again. I'm putting these on all my basses.
