What are some of the smoothest flatwounds? I played on a set today that were on a Dean fretless and they were very smooth. The store owner said that they were D'darrios. Anyways, what are the smootgest?

I play both, TI Flats on my 5 string fretless and D'Adarrio Chrome Flats on my P bass. They feel as "smooth" as each other, and both sound great. You can really get so much depth from either set, either way you go it's a winner.

Smooth as in feel? If so the smoothest I have tried would be LaBella/Fender. Next would be Chromes. TI Jazz flats are the roughest flats I have ever played.

Tapewounds have a very slippery feel.

However, even TI flats are extremely smooth compared to rounds. There is really no comparison.

Smooth

IMHO ...I would say the Sadowsky flats are the smoothest I've played.

I prefer Daddario Chromes or Sadowsky flats..... i will switch either or.. Love the way they feel. I never cared for the TI flats.. they always felt as if they rolled under your fingers....
If i want old school i go Labella flats

Thanks everyone

Thanks for the response to all. In fact, since my post, I put back on my old Fender flatwounds that the bass came with when I bought it (MIM Jazz fretless).

The guys saying TI must not have played other flats because TI has quite a gap between each wind. Not that they aren't great strings if you like their feel and sound, but they don't feel nearly as smooth as all the true, traditional flatwounds just named.

Probably the smoothest I've felt were Dean Markley flats, but all the other trad ones are so close that might have been the way my fingertips were that day ; }

LaBella Flats are the smoothest then Chrome D'Addario's Fender flats,Thomastil Jazz flats and the roughest so far SIT Power Flats. SIT's are flat ground rounds.

I've played them all and found GHS the best feel.

Thumbs up Lakland

Some may find this surprising, but I love Laklands flats. They produced great growl and were smooth as butter. And they are slightly cheaper than TIs. Great strings though.

D'addarios

I've had the same set on my spector for about 8 months. They still have a great tone, and the intonation is perfect, i play my bass on an average of 20 hours a week, I haven't had a set that long ever.

If you're really looking for that smooth feel, I've got to agree with Greenboy. The BEA's on the jazz's are not that smooth.
Not sure about the others in their lineup.
Personally, I really like the TI Jazz and use them on all but the 4 string fretted.
I'd probably go with ribbons, chromes or coated (in that order) if I wanted that silky feel as a main priority.

Another vote for D'Addario's. I have them on my fretless and they are great.

I use Sadowsky Flats, La Bella Deep Talkin' Flats, DA Chrome Flats, and TI Flats. The Sadowsky and La Bella flats are the smoothest followed closely by the DA Chromes. All Three brands are quite smooth to the touch. The TI's, and they are a very good string, are not as smooth as the other three brands.
