Question Smooth bright strings for a 5er?

Sign in to disble this ad
Please help me choose strings for my new bass, a Modulus Flea 5 34" scale. I play rock mostly and want a smooth flatwound feeling string because I like how they feel, plus I hate the scratching noise when slideing. But I generally like the tone of roundwounds more.

At first I was thinking of TI Jazz JF 345 strings but the B would probably be a little too dull for me...

I tried D'Addario half-wounds on a friends bass and didn't like them, they seemed to lack harmonic content.

I was thinking some coated strings...any suggestions?

DR Extra-Life Black beauties??

Try Elixir's. They are roundwound but have a very smooth feel and stay decently bright. The Nanoweb coating is their claim to fame.

The Half Wounds are dull to me also.
For a coated string the Elixer Nanowebs are decent, however if you string through the body rather than top load you will get some hum noise as the only place the string gets it grounding is at the ball and it will contact the ferrell in the body that is not grounded. You can scrape some coating at the saddle but it will cause premature shedding of the coating, or you can ground the ferrells to the bridge, which I may do the next time I use them, or just top load them if your bass allows.

Rotosound Tru Bass 88, Black Nylon Flatwound

Very smooth but I don't know how bright they'll sound on your bass. I had them on my Modulus Q5 for a while. The Q5 tends to have too much brightness so they tamed it down a little.

Rotosound 55 pressure wounds. Nice and smooth and you can hear how they sound on the Roto website. I have just bought 3 more sets so I like em!

DR High Beams are compressed wound.
Nice feel for a Round Wound string. Less string screech.
Awesome sound

sadowsky bright nickels are nice. nickel usually has that smooth feel, and yet, they've been engineered for a brighter almost "non nickel" sound.

been using them for the past few years, and they have pretty much what you're asking.
