Smooth, High Tension Flatwounds?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking for some suggestions for some smooth feeling, higher tension flats.

The Chromes are a possibility, but I find the newer versions (last 2 yrs?) to be more sticky, rough feeling. Their older ones were perfect and I have them on my shortscale Stambaugh.

Not Labellas. I currently have these and they are the ones I want to replace (FM set... also tried jamersons). They just aren't sounding great with this particular bass, which is an SX shortscale jazz with Model J pickups.

If I can find the right flatwounds I might even gig this bass.

Others I have tried are the Pyramids and 9050s which were okay, but not the holy grail.

Any others?

I'm loving the webstrings flats I have on my P. I have the highest guage they have (110 E string). Very smooth and thumpy. Super high tension.

For about $20 you can't go wrong.

You could also try the new Fender CL flats that people are excited about.

GHS flats (purple windings) are a fairly high tension set that are available at the L&M Vancouver store. The trade off is they are more percussive sounding than a more flexible set like Chromes or the even more flexy TIs. I'm really liking the Chromes on the Landing.

Another idea might be the black Labellas which are a medium tension set. I have those on my fretless Rob Allen Mouse 30. I may try a set on the Landing. Is the Stambaugh through body or top loading?

The Roto 77 set has very high tension and felt smooth to me. I have to try a 40-100 set, the 45-105 was a workout!

The Stambaugh is both STB and top loading.

I'll have to look into these string suggestions guys. Thanks.

Of course, the problem with buying strings is if you dont like them you are stuck as returns are not possible.

I love the 77 rotosound flats on my fretless jazz. They are VERY high tension (had to give my trussrod a fair amount of tightening after switching to these), very, very smooth to the touch and also very bright, considering they're flats, which I happen to like, as it brings out a lot of 'mwah' from the fretboard. If you're looking for 'thump', these are probably not for you.

Some of the highest tension flats I've tried are DR. They seemed to have a smooth polished feel too.
