Snapping strings, help?

Sign in to disble this ad
Basically, I've had some strings on my Thunderbird Epiphone (rotosound nickel on steel roundwound) and they're heavy gauge but I've played in two gigs recently and my A string snapped right on top of where it lays across my bridge in both gigs in the same song at the same point. Either it is a massive coincidence or I'm extremely unlucky. I play with a pick pretty close to the bridge because I like the sound it gives but I'm worried this is going to happen again and again because of how I play. Anyone able to give any ideas or solutions, it would be much appreciated!

Sounds like you have a burr on your bridge. Look it over closely to see if you have any small metal pieces sticking out. If you're not confortable working on your bridge maybe take it to a tech. Should be an easy fix.

Funny you should post this today. While playing along with ? Mark and The Mysterians CD collection earlier today, I recalled seeing Frank Lugo break a string @ the Exit/In back in the '90s. Probably an original flat from the '60s.

I've playing guitar since 1969 and have literally seen 1000s of live shows. Besides Frank, the only time I've witnessed a bass string break was on 2 occasions by Mike Watt. Once playing with Firehose and again with The Fog.

Cheers man, I've had a look on the saddle of the A string and it does seem a bit rough. I'll have a go a filing it down or something. Thank you!

By the way ironically, Mike was playing his blue Thunderbird on both those occasions. Frank was either playing a p or a jazz, seems like a sunburst jazz.
