They are among the best strings out there, great flexibility. They are my #1 choice along with Rotosounds.

great flexibility to me seemed like overly floppy

also too much twangy brightness. I put them on a fender american jazz and hated them.

I don't like them either. They are very high quality strings, but not my style.

Just kidding, wanted to follow the trend.

Well,

They are bright strings, so If bright isn't your thing I'd recommend not trying them out. However, if You like some high end zing, these strings are quite nice. They've got excellent life and feel too IMHO.

They're all I use, but they fit my style perfectly. Can be a little harsh (high end) if you arent careful with your EQ, but otherwise I love them.

They mellow out very nicely, however, and stay that way for a very long time. I had a Yamaha 5 string with Hi Beams that I left on for a couple years. They still sounded great, and were as warm as nickel strings are.

Only boredom and string GAS led me to take them off.

They work for me

I bought a set by mistake ( I was looking for a high tension string ) - but they have worked great for me. I put them on my G&L L5500 and love them. they are a little zingy, but not bad. My G&L has EMGs, and I use a Sansamp BDDI with IEM's. Very happy all the way around.

I recently put a set of LOW RIDERS on my L2500. A little too bright for me (again with the Sansamp, but in my home studio) - plus they seemed to be rough on my finger tips. But I mainly play flats, so that is probably a factor.

I have a brand new set of 5 string Low Riders for $25 if anybody wants them. I will pay the shipping.

Mark

They're all i ever use!

Allthough they're incredibly expensive over here. Payed 73 euro's for my last packet of 5. That's more than $ 100. But i needed them urgently, on the net they cost allmost half that much.

The will scare you a bit for a couple hours.. they start off REALLY bright. However, as others have said, they settle into a very nice smooth brightness and last a long, long time.

The tension and feel are different.. they are a touch loose, which I like, but be aware they do feel different from other strings.

They also have a smoother feel to them.. almost nickel feeling versus other SS roundwounds.

I've used one of the lightest gauges they offer (.040-.100) for 10+ years and am a Hi-beam fanatic. I think in all that time I've broken maybe 2 or 3. They definately mellow over time. To me old high beams sound like new nickel strings for the most part.

I really don't think that what you've heard is true at all.

I've tried DR strings, and they were good, and I've known people who absolutely swear by them and would never, ever, buy anything else...

BUT - I don't think you really get a free bag of chips when you buy them. That would be cool though, wouldn't it.

I like the DR Black Beauties, the coated version of the Hi Beams.

I've tried black beauties, hi-beams, and I'm on sun beams now. I was pretty sold on the hi-beams until the guitar shop was sold out and I tried sun beams instead. I'm playing on a fretless Fender Jazz, and they're pretty jamming. Get some serious funk out of those things.

Are the Hi beams tapered at all? I would like to try them but I currently use a tapered core string and don't want to do a new setup to accomodate a non tapered string.

Hi Beams are so amazing - smooth even feel and tone. Low Riders feel very stiff to me with their Hex core. I use Blue Steels as an alternate.

Again... does anyone know if the strings have a slight taper at the ball end or is the string the same gauge the entire length????

I have never seen tapered Hi-Beams and I've been using them off and on for several years. In fact, I just put a new set on my Sadowsky NYC 4. "Long Necks" are tapered, but according to an email I got from DR, they are Lo-Riders with a tapered core.
