Yesterday I bought a set of DR Black Beauties at GC since a string broke before a gig and I didn't have a backup fretless bass. The bass in question was a fretless Precision with Optima Gold flatwounds.
However, I ended up borrowing my friend's awesome fretless Stingray. However, the SR isn't what this post is about.
Now I have this unused set of DR Black Beauties. At home I have an extra set of GHS Precision flats as well. Question is, should I put the DRs on my 08 Fender instead of my fretless P (which would just get the GHS flats) or just replace the Optimas with the GHS flats.
I already have a set of GHS Precision flats on my 08 P and I'm happy with them, but I'm looking for a change of pace, you know?

The Dr black beauties will give you thick lows, burpy mids, and crisp top. The GHS precision flats will give you deep dark bottom, strong mids and mellow treble also good for pick tones. Bass player magazine, Jan 98 and Dec 2004. You choose. |

They're both P-basses.

IME ... Black Beauties are pretty decent on fretless (a bit buzzy, aggressive attack), but it really boils down to what you like .... and what you from your tone.

I ave yet to find flats, once I know that Optima makes goldcoated flats, Rotosound is out for me But new flats have to look and sound good to get me away from the Jazz Bass monel strings.. |

Uber mellow and they keep that sound for awhile.
Unfortunately, they don't like weird tunings I think. (F A# E F#)

Think of meaty, bassy, full, etc.
It sounds kinda like a growl.
Heck, what kinda tone do you get out of flats?
