I've been playing bass guitar for about a year an a half now, an one thing i just havent learned are the different kinds of strings and the different sounds that comes along with them.

So i need some advice. I play in a metal/punk like band and im looking for some new strings.

i know i want some real heavy gauges, and i like deep dark tones.

What kind of strings should i get?

My bass teacher suggests that i should get some DR's, but i want to hear an outside opinion. And if yu think DR, what kind of DR's should I get?

If you go with DR's, I'd suggest their Low Riders.

Take a look around Bassplayer.com (Bass Player's Magazine's website), they recently did a string shootout that you should be able to find there. From what I recall, GHS Boomers may be a string for you to consider.

good luck!

I've been through the search and journey of strings.

At the moment I'm settled on DR strings. I personally like either the stainless steel hi-beams or the lo-riders. hi-beams are more flexible and easier to play but stiff strings don't bother me so lo-riders are fine too, both sounds good. I would say they are very suitable for any genre.

If they are a bit over the budget, D'addario prosteels are pretty good too. Cheaper than DR's but lasts a decent lifespan and generally sounds good.

Good luck with your strings.

Hi cubinicano.

What kind of bass do you play? How many strings? How is it tuned?

One pretty much has to try a few (sometimes several) different makes & types of bass strings to figure out which works best for one's own tonal goals and desired playing feel.

For example if you like Steve Harris' bass tone, he uses heavy gauge Rotosound SH77 Monel Flatwounds.

I've tried a lighter version of these strings in the past. When new they sound a lot like roundwounds with a bigger bottom. After they die down they have a growly, fat tone. They're quite aggressive sounding for flatwounds, they feel fairly smooth--and they don't eat frets.

That being said, D'Addario Chromes (flatwounds) are quite popular on TalkBass due to their bottom end and bright tone.

Another approach would be to try a best selling string brand & type and then work from there.

BTW. Heavier strings usually have a higher tension and an often brighter sound due to having stronger overtones.

Oh yeah. +1 on getting more than one opinion and on having a bass teacher!

Well right now I'm playing on a 4-string Squire P-Bass. And with my band i normally tune to C-G-C-F.

This is what my band sounds like: Myspace.com/theperfectdefectmiami

-My bass doesnt sound so hot bcuz these were recorded in my early bass playing stages lol

- I do like Steve Harris' Bass tone, but im looking for something that's a bit more darker tone.

To me the DR Lo-Rider Nickels have a dark crunchy tone. If you got light gauge I think it would be awsome for punk.
