I wouldn't say I was loyal to a brand, but I mostly use Rotosound Swing '66. Other strings I often use are Elites Stadium and Ernie Ball nickel slinky.

These d'addario nickels are great!! Very easy to play on. Although I'm used to a thicker guage, I can adjusr to these. I'll try a thicker one next time. Good string though.

Went back to Marcus Millers on the Jazz from Fender flats. I think I had a bad D string on the flats. Used Marcus strings for years and they sound great. I use TCRM Ken Smith on the Pedulla 5 String.

Rounds, always nickel: DR Hellborgs for the four string, DR lowriders for the five. For a softer feel Infeld Superalloys.

For flats and in general, TI jazz flats. These are my favorite strings ever. Yeah, they cost, but so what? These strings last for years and keep getting better, why would I worry about the cost? They are more economical than any rounds I've ever used. About the price of a bottle of good scotch, and they last a whole lot longer.

I won't use anything other than RotoSound. I use different gauges on different basses, but I don't use any other brand anymore. I've tried quite a few out in the time I've been playing, and none of them seem to sound new, or as reliable in tuning terms, for as long as RS.

D'Addario Chromes and D'Addario Tapewounds. Love the warmth, smooth feel, tension.. Fantastic strings! Probably gonna buy a set of Tapes to replace the factory strings on my new Ibanez AEB5E. I already have Tapes on my Squier Standard Precision V (Jazz electronics) and I really fancy them!

I think you might have the pickups too close.
This is what happend to me.I thought my bass was crap but as it turns out it was the pickups being too close for comfort.

Rotosound swing bass 66. Don't really like anything else. Nickels get too dull too fast for me. Don't really understand what others don't like about them. I understand that they're not to people's taste, but I don't get what they don't like.

3 of my basses have GHS pressure wounds. Particularly good on fretless. the 4th bass is finicky - needs some sort of nickel rounds. Still trying to figure out what it wants.

Yeah, 66s are awesome. I like Blue Steels too though. I like the Rotos better when they are brand new, but the Blue Steels last longer and sound better after they are a month or so old.

That said, I usually stick with the Rotos and just replace them often.

All (two) of my basses have these. One is technically Ken Smith, but whatever. My future instruments will surely have these as well.

D'Addario flatwound Chromes. I was a long-time nickel plated roundwound user until the first time I tried flats. Love the smooth feel, lack of string noise.

I just got a set the other day. I've always used stainless strings. Ernie Balls, DR fat beams and hi beams, and Dunlop SS's. I think Cobalts are my new favorite. They really sing. Sound so focused and full.

Anyway, they catch my vote! I was blown away when I first started using them. They provide for a great extremely-bright, punchy, metallic tone. I always string my ADJ bass with the Regular Light guage ProSteels. Really, very excellent strings.
I will absolutely second that! These strings are bright, have the least tension compared to all other strings out there, and they retain their zing for a REALLY long time, almost indefinitely. And if this weren't enough, they are cheaper in price than most other brands. You just can't beat their value, in my opinion.

I really don't think of Rotos 66 as a slap string. I play finger style and the have great snap and punch.

ive been playing 12+ hours day for two-three months with (nickel) low riders and they still sounded OK.
i believe what you call dead is what most would call "broken in".
or maybe you had a set of lemons
try dr hi beams
