Question Some brighter flats for my rick 4003

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone have some suggestions for some flatwounds that could provide a brighter sound? i was thinking about maybe some chrome flats? but I'm not sure because i've never really used flatwounds on either of my basses before so i'm not that familiar with them. I'm looking for a tone similar to Cliff's on Kill 'Em All (i heard he used flats on that album)

Check out the Steve Harris signature flats (by rotosound IIRC). Supposedly they're pretty bright sounding for flats. I haven't tried em yet, so ymmv.

Or try a string that is similar to a flat but not exactly a flat...

Like Half Rounds...

Yes, Chromes. The 45-100 set is a very good match for a 4003.

Also, maybe try halfrounds, or pressurewounds. I suggest D'Addario Half Rounds or GHS Pressurewounds. The Pressurewounds will be a little brighter than the ground wounds.

I put on a set of Fender 9050CL's on my 4003s. Very happy with them. Not quite as bright as Chromes from what people tell me, but much more defined than a set of Labella DTB's.

This surprises me. The stainless steel Fender 9050's produce a brighter sound than the d'Addario ECB81 Chromes do, on My Ibanez GSR200EX. Could this be a matter op pick-up placement, or technology? By the way, I prefer the sound and feel of the d'Addos.
