Sound differences between gauges?

Sign in to disble this ad
Dumb question I suppose since I could just go buy some new strings and try 'em all out I suppose! But... I have been using 45-105's and was looking at Dr's offerings and wondered what a heavier guage would do? Looking for good sustain, phat, deep growl but not muddy, etc. Just wondering...

Itll give a slightly fuller tone. The main difference is in playability; larger strings have more tension.

I went from 45-65-80-105-128 Blue Steels to 50-70-85-105-128, and it gave me, as figjam says, a fuller sound with more body and bass. Especially the .085 a-string is not as "hollow" sounding as the 0.80. The slight difference in playabillity, which you'll get used to anyway, is not a problem (I think, atleast).
