Spector 5 strings - string options?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a crafted in korea 5 string spector bass which I picked up "used" from my local guitar center.

I dont know much about spector basses. This one is orange-ish and has black hardware. It has two EMG-HZ pickup. Its serial number is 0223900. If any one can tell me something about this bass (model no, year etc) I would really like to learn more about this bass.

Anyway, I need to replace strings and I dont have much knowledge about 5 string bass strings... as to which companies a renowned...which ones to avoid.

I think the bass is long scale (it has 24 frets).

Can you guys recommend any roundwounds or flatwounds (my p-bass copies have them!) sets for this bass?

Thanks.

If you're looking for flats, try D'Addario Chromes.

Nope. The ReBop is made in the Czech. MIK means it is probably a Legend.

Choice of strings depends on the sound/feel you are looking for.

As far as brands go DR is probably my favorite, though I use others as well. I'd recommend the nickle Lo Riders (to emphasize low-mid growl) or Black Beauties (more hi-fi). I also like the Sunbeams quite a bit.

There is nothing specific to this instrument - or to any other particular instrument - that calls for a particular make/model of string: there are simply far too many variables to consider - especially your individual, subjective preferences.

Bottom line: Go forth and experiment...

Thanks for your responses.

I have a set of DR Black beauties on a fretless jazz and I love them.

My concern is that my spector (legend?) might be 36 inches... are these strings that long?

After trying several brands / types of strings on my Spector, I like the DR Nickel Lo-Riders the best. They have a great balance of tone from the lows to the mids to the highs. String to string balance of tone is great. They also last a long time.

3rd DR Lowriders. The EMG's and LR are a good combo IMO

It sounds like a ns2000q5 because I just put a down payment on a bass with that exact description.

Does it look like this one?

But yea I'm not sure what strings, I bought DR Hi Beams for mine when I finally get it. It's all in taste, I like brightness.

Edit: If its the same bass, the scale is only 35 inches.

I will say this. IMO the 5 string Spectors E string sounds a little thin. Huge B, thin E. 4 stringers E's are fine. The DR LR nickel or SS really nail that low mid in order to make the E sound thick. Just my .02. but I tried A LOT of strings before I settle in the DR LR when I played Spectors.
