There could be many reasons for your problem. First off, you need to know which gauge strings you currently have on the bass. If you buy a lighter gauge, you're going to need to do some setup work on the bass for it to play properly.
Next, it's best to change one string at a time to keep some string tension on the neck. If you pull them all off at one time, you need to get them all installed and back to proper tune. The neck tends to pull back slightly without string tension on, and then when you get the strings on, you'll sometimes notice that the action is really low and unplayable. Alot of times if you just wait and keep the strings in tune, the neck will settle back, but not always.
As far as adjusting string heights go, you really need to spend some time in the setup and repair forum. If you just go adjusting strings up or down, you might find that it was the neck that needed a truss adjustment instead. You might also not know how to put the strings back to the same height they were at...
Don't fret.. All basses need some tweaking from time to time, and changing strings often brings that on. If you're unsure, it's best to take it to a pro and have them change strings for you.
