Squier P roundwound suggestions

Sign in to disble this ad
searched about 5 pages so i think ill ask this question...

i got a squier p(replacing the p'ups with tesla p/j set) and the stock strings
ive decided on roundwounds(is this a good decision?)
i play mostly rock with some reggae/ska thrown in...
i slap very little as i suck at it
i use pick about 40% of the time

my question(s)-
-what length do i need? (34" scale)
-what width do i need?
-what brand should i get? (price isnt that big a deal cause strings r pretty cheap so aslong as they last a good while id say its worth it)
-is it worth making one of those denatured alcohol pvc tubes to clean strings?

thanks for the help

if you get flats they last for ever. Roundwounds I just buy the cheapest ones usually ghs, then boil them once they get dull. Wipe them with windex, then when they go again I buy a new set.

-what length do i need? (34" scale), just get the longest you can so you can cut if its too long
-what width do i need? around 40 to 105 is nice IMO
-what brand should i get? 1st suggestion:GHS 2nd suggestion: daddario(they are really cheap but are really great strings IMO)
-is it worth making one of those denatured alcohol pvc tubes to clean strings?, i havent tried it, but i think it could add some life to your strings, maybe a couple of weeks if done properly

basically anything between 40 and 105 will due fine

GHS boomers is what i normally use their cheap and good
my second suggestion though would be elixors
i've used those for my rick' and they last a very long time
no dead spots and are just sounding great

If you use a pick i wouldnt get the Elixers, while they may be great the coating wont last with a pick unfortunately. Id suggest some DR Hi-Beams

another vote for GHS strings here. My preference is for the light guage. Ive got them on my SX P right now and love them.

Any good nickel plated steel roundwound should give you the tone you are looking for. I like the D'addario XL Nickelwounds 50-105. Great strings and they age very well. Oh Ya...Flatwounds don't last forever.

GHS Boomers medium gauge long scale (Long Scale+ will work just fine too). Those are my "go to" roundwounds.

Have you ever tried flats?? On a P they're the cats meow IMHO.

You may find flatwound strings to be a little too mellow for rock, r&b and funk. But you might like them for jazz and reggae where you might need a more mellow sound. -Tunemybass.com (From the FAQ)
i think ill wait for flats till i get a fender J...i just dont play that much jazz/reggae to warrant these kind of strings..but thanks for the advice

strung up the d addrios first still beating them in...ill post back when in a few days/weeks when the real tone comes in
