SR500 coming, string suggestions?

Sign in to disble this ad
Since this is a lot to ask, I'll try and be specific in terms of what I'm looking for...

With my Ibanez SR500, I'm wanting to let the preamp do a lot of the shaping and have some strings with a decently malleable tone. I have DR's on my j-bass and p-bass and love them but since the SR500 will probably get the bulk of my playing, and i do the 3 p's when i play (pop, pluck and pick) I want something that won't make my head clip every time I dig in or start popping and slapping, or go crazy when I use my effects board. I had GHS Bass Boomer mediums on an SRX3EX and the low E would almost always set off my preamp clip (with the pad on) when I did anything besides a soft pluck.

I like DR's, but I'm worried about a lack of low-end on them and the way their are compressed it has more tension than regular strings of that gauge. I know this might sound stupid but any suggestions? I don't particularly have a lot of money to try out all different types of strings and I checked on strings ppl are using on SR500's (got one about flatwounds lol).

Decent low-end, good articulate attack and not too harsh?

Ibanez SR basses come with Elixirs. I took them off my SR400 after about 3 1/2 weeks, and put a set of SIT Powerwounds on it for more brightness, but the Elixirs still sound great though flaking some.

Mine came with Elixirs which were nice, but I play with 35s usually, so I swapped them for a set of Rotosound Roundwound Swing 66 35s.

I can't recommend them enough, brilliant for slap and pop and a real nice finger tone, not lacking in low end like some lower gauge strings. Really nice aggressive punchy sound when you dig right in.

I have 3 sets I rotate between
DR MM's seem to be a bit brittle on the highs
DR sunbeams not so brittle
fender 7150's seems the best and are cheap 17.99 on ebay
I have an Ibanez sr650 basically the same but a burled top
pups and preamp are the same
