Stainless rounds for Precision?

Sign in to disble this ad
Searched; didn't see what I was after: Stainless steel roundwounds for a P-Bass. It seems everyone wants nickel, flats or at least something to tame the clack & finger noise- I want the opposite. I'm after zing, clank & finger noise(of course I also want nice funadamental undeneath it all).

Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EJC-_B0Y0w

If that's not actually a Precison, it's still an example of the kind of tone I'm looking for.

I have stainless rounds on my '57 AV RI and I think they are great. I use Fender 7350M's. I was just A-Bing my AV RI's last night and that '57 has the best action and feel of all my basses. Not sure if they are higher tension but I can get them pretty low without buzzing. They "feel" "tighter" than the NPS and Nickel strings on my other basses. I am still liking the sound of the NPS 7250's on the '62 AV RI but man those 7350's are something special. I had kind of forgotten as I normally only use that bass for Sunday service and the music is quite simple.
I ran through some Pretenders, Rory Gallagher and The Specials with all the basses and those stainless strings really worked well. I am planning on some more quality time with that bass this evening.
I can get that Cure sound with the tone at about halfway, maybe a little passed.
I use this bass on Sundays because of the way it sits in the mix. The team really likes it.

Try Rotosound RS66LDs - the original Stainless Steel Roundwounds. I've been using these since 1974 when Fender still sold Precisions with Flatwounds and the ashtrays (with the string mute) attached.

They used to say "Used and Recommended by John Entwhistle" on the packet!.

Wow, guys- quick responses. I'm going to have to hang out here more often.

PJS- Roto's were my first thought, actually(& I do recall the Entwistle endorsement ). I'll look for a light-ish/lower-tension gauge, as that's what I like generally.

Mr 9mm- I don't know why but I'm somehow prejudiced against Fender strings. I'll admit it makes no sense really; I love their basses as well as many of their amps, and I've had no experience, good or bad, w/their strings. Convince me I'm being silly(shouldn't be too difficult ).

Anyone else?

Edit: Neveremind- just ordered a set of SM-66's from Elderly, as per a PMed suggestion. TB is the best.

well you already ordered a set, but next time try Labella Hard Rockin Steel. Very nice strings for a P-bass IMO.

While I've enjoyed flats on my P Basses, I use DR highbeams on my Jazzes and everything else. Zing and growl baby!

From an avid Precision bass kinda guy I recommend the DR High Beams or the Rotosounds. The DR regular Stainless Steals are pretty alright, and they're cheap.

Though you already bought some strings, I'd suggest checkin out Dean Markley Blue Steels next time.

I absolutely agree with the Rotosound RS66LD recomendation - I have used them on my Fender Precision (and other) basses for 25 years!

For some reason I have read other people trash Rotosound (rottensound!) over the years but I always trust my own ears & fingers on such matters....they have a great tone and they feel good. I have never had a dead string from Rotosound - great strings!

rotosound all the way. unapologetic p bass tone all the way. i myself prefer a larger gauge, but regardless these things sound awesome. don't waste your time (or money!) on some wannabe stainless strings.

Rotos seem like very low tension strings to me, I've only really played with the rock staples like Dunlop and Ernies so I dunno what many of the other string brands are like, but I play 110s and they're lighter feeling then most then most 100-105 gauge strings I've played. Got a nice zing that's not too OTT either, but much for me though, I'd be interested to see what their nickles are like.

Everyone's going to recommend what they use and like but it's up to you. I can vouche from personal experience that the DR Fat Beams sound good on a precision. Bright and sizzle with mids and smooth warm bottom end.

It's not a Precision, but I just put Stainless Lo Riders on my Stingray and man! They are the best I've ever used!

For clank and grind nothing does it for me like Roto SS rounds on a P!

I get great mileage out of them by keeping 3 sets in rotation and soaking them in alcohol after they lose their top.

In any case, they still sound great, just different, when older. They keep a large part of their distinctive personality instead of just sounding generic when duller, like some other rounds.

I'm not entirely happy with any of the 3 I mentioned to be honest.

Thanks to all- the Rotos arrived today, got them on, LOVE them. On the couple of non-Roto recommendations- I've tried DRs & liked them, also the Blue Steels on my Jazz 4(like them a lot on that one, but it's by nature a smoother bass; the P is for kuh-LANGKADGE ). While changing strings i also repcaed the Hipshot bridge w/a more original-looking Fender type unit. I'm liking this bass more & more.

Some people think they're really clever, they smash your head against a wall!

7350s sounded really nice on my maple P/J.
