Stainless roundwound string suggestions

Sign in to disble this ad
Long long ago, I once tried SS strings and hated the texture/friction on my fingertips. It reminded me of what it feels like eating spinach and then grinding your teeth. As a result, I've always used Nickel roundwounds on all my basses.

Anyway, has SS string technology made any progress? Are there brands out there that have the smooth feel of nickel, but the sonic characteristics of SS?

I'm open to any suggestions! Thanks.

I was very impressed with the new Sadowsky Blue Label SS strings. They're smoother to the touch that the Sadowsky Black Labels or DR High Beams and a tad more flexible. I'd give them a shot if I were you.

You can't do very much about the basic properties of steel vs. nickel. But what surely would help is looking for strings using a thinner wire for the outer winding, thusly yielding a finer finish.

Another way to go was using one of the brighter variety nickel- or gold-plated or otherwise coated strings.

Ritter Swordsteel are the strings you are looking for

I have found the Labella HRS 40-100 feels smoother than 45-105. Not sure if its the lower tension that makes the 40-100 set feel better or not. When I play the 45-105 set, I feel like my fingers are sticking to the strings. I also really like the 40-100-128T set (M42B) on my RV5.
