I have an older gibson bass and the frets are wore down (still alive but wore down). The bass plays awesome but i afraid the stailess well chew up the frets real bad and i will have to get a refret (which i dont want to do)........ How bad do they eat frets(if at all) and should i just stay with nickel.

Sounds like you should play with nickels or flatwound strings. Stainless steel strings are notorious from eating away at your frets.

If you really want to use SS rounds. I'd go with the DR Hi-Beams. They are the only SS strings that I know of that will be easy on the frets. But they are low tension strings, so be aware of that. I am very concerned about fret wear too. I use DR nickel Lo-Riders on two for my three Ricks and haven't had an issue with the frets. I use Chromes flats on the other. If you can, experiment and see what works best for you.
