Steve Harris Flats With A Thunderbird

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys, i usually use rotobass roundwound strings on my thunderbird (50 - 110) i love the heavyness of these things, I called my local music store this morning and shock horror there are non left! however they do stock steve harris flats (which are the same gauge if not slightly heavier) I was wondering how these things would sound on an Epi-Thunderbird, bearing in my im use to a very bright tone but ive always wanted to a set of steve harris strings just to try out?

any oppinions? should i buy them?

They're not going to be as bright sounding as the rounds you're used to thats for sure, but you'll have wayyy more thump and no fingernoise. You're going to have to make some adjustments in terms of the truss rod and re-intonate your bass. Those flats are much more tense than the rounds you're used to.

You have to give yourself time to get used to them too. I used them for four shows and had a very large, very painful blister on my right, middle finger. I had to play two shows with the blister too. Not very good nights.

Anyway, they sound great at first. But, after playing them a few times they sound like regular flats. That dull, dead sound. No amount of cleaning can restore the brightness. I went back to Rotosound rounds.

my mate uses flats on a T-bird. very rock and roll sound!

FWIW... I've seen Nikki Sixx's t-bird in the hard-rock cafe up in Cardiff, and that was strung with flats??

I love these strings, I use them on my basses, great tone, no issues with blisters, can't say enough good things about them.

I have a set on my 82' Gibson Victory & Love the sound.
I also get positive comments from other musicians on the sound!
I also recommend Ernie Ball Power Slinky 55-75-90-110 they sound great on my gsr200 and no break-in period.
Both are good with the EB Power slinks being cheaper in price.
