Steve Harris Rotos and Tension Question

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys--

I've a set waiting to go on my maple neck P bass, or perhaps my AVS '62 Jazz. However, I'm concerned that the tension over time will warp my neck, as Roto flats seem to have that reputation. My P Bass is a CS, and don't wanna F the neck up. I'm more willing to experiement with the Jazz. Anyone have experience with these strings? And BTW--did'nt JPJ of Zep early on use Roto flats on the his Jazz?

Thanks,

Andy.

I've never heard that flats will warp your neck before . If the tension on the new set is greater than your current set, they will possibly cause a bit more curvature in your neck than you would be comfortable with. Your trussrod will need adjustment.

From what I hear, Steve Harris flats are the highest tension flats around. They may require a set up if you put them on the bass

Very stiff strings. I had a set they are very high in tension.

They are very stiff, high tension strings. I had them on my last fretless, and though they stiffness makes them tough to play at first, the sound was second to none.

I put the Harris set on my 57 P a few days ago. I prefer a nearly straight neck with very little relief- the trussrod required about a 1/4 turn to compensate for the increased string tension. Of course the intonation needed to be reset as well. It took me about 15 minutes to get my P tweaked and playing like a dream. I'm pretty impressed with Roto SH set; they feel great and sound really huge- just what my P needed!

I'm pretty committed to the Sadowsky flats on my Jazz though- very low tension, lots of growl, and they feel ultra slick under my fingertips.

If the tension is too high for you with the SH set, you can always go down a guage or two. Try the 45-105 set, or my favorite, the 40-100 set. BTW, there is NO difference in the RS77LE set and the SH set except the packaging.
