Stingray 5 Players...

Which strings do you like best on your Stingray 5. I've had Elixir stings on mine for a good while and I like them, but I'm curious which strings you've settled on for yours. Let me know...

Cool... I don't like me either.

It's not a dumb question, is it? Certain strings sound better on certain basses, do they not?

I tried a few different types of strings after my original slinky's wore out.

DR Low riders
Laballa deep talking flats
D'Adarrio Nickles

But I ultimatley came back to Ernie ball Super slinky's.

They don't last as long as the other strings as they die out rather quickly, but to my ears they sound the best. They sound somehow bring out the aggrisive musicman tone.

IMHO It's hard to find a bass that DR Highbeams don't sound great on

Ya know, I just threw some HighBeams on my SR5 & they sound great. But, I pretty much expected it.

I really didnt like the Slinky's because the LowB just felt like a rubber band.

I've had my SR5 for ten years now and have tried a variety of strings. I always end up back at the Slinkys. I agree that they don't last as long, but they give me the best balance between slap and fingerstyle, plus they're relatively cheap and easy to find if you're out on the road and need a set.

I didn't like the slinkys at all. I've been very happy with D'Addario Nickels.

I would like to try some DRs on it though. I have not used DRs in many years. (before I had my Ray5)

I would think that a Stingray and a set of Hi-Beams would be an ideal match...

I like D'Addario on my other basses, but I used them once on the SR5 and switched back to the Elixirs. I should try them again. I tried the Slinkys, too, and they died quick. They did sound good, though. I don't care for High Beams because I don't like how they grab my fingers. I might try nickel low riders, though.

BAH! I don't know...

The other strings I really liked were the D'Addario Slowwounds, but they don't make them anymore...

Ken Smith Compressors work well on the SR5.

I'll have to try them. I tried the GHS Pressure Wound, years ago. Back then, I wanted a really snappy tone. The pressure wound strings weren't doing it for me. Now, I find myself rolling off high end.

I know this is going to be a strange question but... anyone tried flats? If so, what brands did you like?

I love my SR5 aggressive tone but am considering softening the clank a bit.

Yup. I tried a lot of different strings on the SR5 and the Slinkys just plain sounded right on that bass. I DR Low Rider man on all my basses except for the SR5 (when I owned one).

When I had one I used DR Black Beauties. In fact I still use them on my current 5'er.

Of the flats I tried, I liked Chromes the best. If I remember right the lighter set worked great. I had a set on for two years and just took them off to try something else.

I've tried a few types lik Fender and Warwick, then back to different types of slinkys.

The last 4 times I've put regular slinkys, and they always sound great. But I'm becoming curious to other strings.

DR High Beams, my SR5's always had the attack, sustain, and clarity of a piano with those strings. Loved them.

+1...it's how an SR should sound. A fresh set of Slinkys on an SR are kinda like the smell of napalm in the morning.

I've tried other brands, and while they don't sound bad, I could just never get "that" tone and it had me questioning whether to keep the SR5 which I love to play. The Slinkys are "that" tone for me.

I know they don't last as long as some other brands, but I've learned to accept that, take care of them the best I can and just buy a new set when it's ready. At least they're not too expensive.

I really loved the sound of Lo Riders on my old Stingray. I've kept the original Slinky's on my current Stingray just to give them a try but for Christmas I got a set of Lo Riders that will replace them as soon as I get around to it.

I've been curious about how flats would sound on the Stingray, however, I don't see myself actually doing that right now. With the rounds on the Stingray and flats on my Precision V I can get just about any kind of tone I need for what I'm playing, so even though I'm tempted to try flats I think the rounds will stay on the Stingray.
