Stingray 5 Strings: D'Addario vs Sunbeams

I was hoping that you all could suggest a new set of strings for me on my SR5. I've always used the typical EB regular 5s on there, but I'd like to branch out and try something new. It seems to me like the EBs have a nice lively tone for a while, then go totally dead with no in-between.

I want a warm sound that livens up when slapped, and I prefer nickel over steel by a long shot. I've narrowed it down to either the classic D'Addario nickels (or maybe EXPs), or DR Sunbeams. Here's my thinking:

D'Addario - I've used these on other 4 string basses, and like the tone a lot. I also like the fact that the sets have the same gauges as the EB sets. I'm worried though that it will be too much tension for me though, I like the tension of the EBs, although a little more wouldn't kill me. I may actually enjoy the lower action and tighter B.

Sunbeams - I hear nothing but good things about the tone of these things. I really like the feel of high-beams, just not the bright tone. I thought the nickel version would warm it up. The downside to them is availability and I don't like the 5 string set gauges they offer.

Any thoughts?

Sunbeams are made of win. Like Hi-beams, they are low tension strings.

Hi Capn,

I switched from Slinky's to XL's last month. IMO/IME the XL's are far more balanced and really improve the "weak E" on my SR4. Never tried a set of 5 string XL's but I'd bet they're just as good. They sound a lot smoother too, Slinky's were my main strings before I switched, the XL's are a lot warmer and less "fartish".

I'd go for 'em!

Ive fallen in love with the Sunbeams on my P-bass and my SUB sterling bass. I'd recommend them in a heartbeat for some NICE tone.
