stingray 5 strings/tension

hey guys some quick questons about lo-riders: do they actually deepen your tone if compared to another set of strings?

im currently playing an SR5 with d'addario XL's on them, and have realized i would like more tension, suggestions for some "tighter" feeling strings? and while i'm on the topic of lo-riders, how is the tension on these compared to the XL's?

any input would be helpful, thank you

yes they deepen the tone. speaking for the SS at least. not the most midrange growl, though. highs are great but not too loud.

XLs are fairly deep and fairly tight strings. Lo riders would be brigther actually, being SS strings, but after compensating the EQ you'd probably get a slightly deeper tone due to the different mids.

I tried Sadowsky Nickel strings on my SR5 for a while, and they get a very deep tone, and a fairly tight feel. Sadowsky stainless would be very deep, bright, and tight. Based on your thread in basses, I'd reccomend trying one of those sets (or both).

Personaly, I am a round core fan. Current favorites for the SR5 are High Beams with a .130 B (IMO much better than the .125)

For some reason I just find the high beams too flexible, which causes me to have to raise the action on my jazz bass V very high. I like the tone though. Bummer...

Did you get your SR5 new? What did you find wrong with the ernie ball slinkys?

In my experience higher tensioned strings gets tighter and more prominent in the lows. I've been using Blue Steels 50-128 on my SR5 for a couple of years now, and they have good tight low-end and growly/warm mids. I'm still a fan of Hi-Beams too, but the lack a little punch and character. Nickel strings has never really done it for me, though Slowounds came close. XL's seems pretty uncharacteristic too. As for the difference between XL's and lo-riders you'll definitely feel the difference and hear it too. Lo-riders will be clearer, tighter and maybe not as warm. To me Hi-Beams and Blue Steels sounds warmer than Lo-Riders.

Good luck

Blue steels..hm..i had some on my older basses but don't really remember what they sounded like, i'll have to try em out. They sound like just what i need, growly/warm midrange with crisp lows.
Yea i don't like the xl's too much...part of it is probably due to them being nickel, but they just sound.....boring...

thanks for the input i'll try some diff. strings out once this set gets old

Sean, Slinkies and I never got along on anything. To my ear, they went from too zingy to too thumpy. I go for the big snarling growl and the EB's never had the right mids for that. Really after all my testing, my two favorites are D'Addario chrome flats and DR High Beams. I guess I would rather cut the high-highs of the High Beams than not have the high mids. Series setting, boost lows a little, cut highs a little...thats where I live most of the time.

I agree about slinkies - went from bright to s***e in the course of a couple of gigs.

I found that the best strings tension wise was Elites Nathan East signature strings on my Stringray.

I like the EB Slinkies. I really like the .130 B string, gives a nice tension. Also I like the fact that you can get a 5 string set for under $25.

update*

got a set of dr lo-riders...boy did they cost me

they do however sound great...good "lo" end..great tension and thickness, does what i was looking for

i will be trying out a set of blue steels once these guys die out, i've used them before but never really noticed too much a difference between strings..either that or i've suddenly become very picky

thanks for the input those who replied
