Strategy or Method for Achieving Custom Gauges

Hey there.

Whenever I've bought strings I've always swapped the Low E out of the package with the store for one that is one step heavier. This is mostly with guitars, because I don't change strings on basses.

I just like it better that way.

But I want to set up a new bass with D'Addario Chromes, and I think I want to start with an .040-to-.100 set, but replacing the .100 with a .105. If you look at the numbers the .105 matches the other strings' tension better anyway.

Is there any official way to get a single Chrome .105 or do I just have to buy two complete sets and throw away what I don't use? I don't mind throwing away one string but throwing away four new strings seems a little wrong.

Thank you kindly.

unless they sell individual strings (check juststrings.com) then yeah, you probably have to throw out some strings.
