So I heard this works for double bass, would it work on a fretted electric bass?

Nope. No ferrous metal content, so they won't cause any signal in the pickup.

Might work if you have a piezo equiped bass or maybe with a lightwave bass seing as how those don't use magnets to sense the strings vibration. Other then that no it won't work on an electric bass.

And what string is the weed whacker string going to be the right gauge for? Fine for single string bass I geauss. But what ya gonna do for weed whacker string for the other strings which of course need diff gauge?

#1--That stuff does NOT work on a URB. However, you can buy URB strings made out of the same material (but extruded in proper gauges)--they are popular with some of the rockbilly crowd. (If you like racing stripe on your URB, you might like these strings.) But you cannot string your URB with weed wacker string from the garden center and expect to rock.

#2--Pickups=magents. Need metal to vibrate. LIke everyone else said. Those "plastic" BG strings you see around? Nylon-coated steel.
