String ? – thicker winding between nut and 1st fret?

Sign in to disble this ad
On the G&L L-1000 that I received last week, the E string has a thicker winding that appears between the nut and the first fret. I’ve heard of some strings having a taper at the bridge, but this is the first time I’ve noticed a string that actually gets thicker between the nut and first fret. Could this be normal for this particular brand of strings or is it possible that someone put short-scale strings on this regular scale bass?

I e-mailed the seller re: the strings and he replied that they are either Dean Markley SR2000 or Will Lee.

Through-body, ain't it?

No it souldn't taper between the first fret and the nut. There are extra long sets that preempt this sort of thing.

Indeed, I'd get new strings.

No, the L-1000 doesn't have a through-body bridge. I'm guessing whoever strung this one up used short-scale (32") strings, but I thought I'd ask for other opinions. Thanks.
