OP, I'd recommend something with a .110 low E-string. I always suggest the balanced sets from Circle K strings. The Standard 112 set should work nicely, and they seem to last forever. I use the same set on my jazz.

If you want something even brighter, D'Addario Pro Steels are a good way to go for cheap. Make a custom set from Welcome to Bass Strings Online - Lay it down... with .110 - .085 - .060 - .045.

What kind of sound are you looking for? Can you find a video on YouTube with a tone you are looking to achieve?

+1 to Funk up there.

Brand wise, I would suggest Elixer. They are good and bright, and the brightness will outlast steels in my experience. Exactly the reason I don't like Elixer. I like the strings to lose it after a while. I just strung up a bass with Fender nickel plated steels. So far, they're pretty nice. Bright, but not obnoxious. Plus the nickel is smooth.

Take the time to learn what strings your fave bassists for that style play. You will of course find that several diff brands are used and liked among these bass players. Use the strings you loike for your bass which also produce a great in the mix sound. These might be: rotosound, ghs, ernie ball, dean markley, daddario, dr, ken smith, or some other brand. Of the popular brands in that list, daddario are my least liked, overly smooth and takes away from a basses nat crunch and growl to my ears.

Ok, here you go, Fender strings suck! Get some real strings, like the Circle K's that someone suggested.

I actually have a similar problem, except I'm going to be tuning to drop C#. As it's kind of an alternative metal band (Think the cooler, more music savvy cousin of the out of wedlock child of Chevelle & Paramore, with as much Tool complexity as I can sneak in), I don't really want too much brightness at all, and I need strings that can handle that extreme detuning. Would flatwounds take out all the bite?

If you want a smoother feeling round, check out Pressure Wounds / Compression Wounds...

Ken Smith, Rotosound, and GHS make some.

They are like Round Wounds, but the outer wrapping is pressed into an oval shape before wrapping making the string much smoother yet still retains the playability of rounds, but you loose the finger noise etc...

Don't Forget - FunkMetalBass pointed you to my website BassStringsOnline.com - we offer discounts to Forum Members on all of our products. Sign up and let me know the name / email address used and I will activate your account as a Forum VIP!

Edited to add: You may like Coated strings for a little smoother feel as well. But for "metal" (at least for me), I want a stainless steel string. DR, Ken Smith, D'Addario, are not too rough on the fingers...

man that's great. i didn't know about you before but i will buy all my strings from you in future.

do you give quantity discounts... for example what if we bought a whole box of rotosound 77's? just asking.

if so, let me ask you about them. my son had been playing the gauge that ran 45-105 but said he found them too big.

we put a set of short scale rotosound 77's on the hagstrom he has that ran 40- 90 and he loves them. my question is, how long are the medium scale 40-90 77's? would they fit his lakland 4-94?

/s/ Dave

Feel free to ask me ANYTHING! I am always glad to work out something.

Lonesomedave - I don't want to move this thread too off track from the OP's question, But the Medium Scale 77's say they will fit 30-32" scale instruments 760mm long.

For the lakeland (34" scale) the "Hybrid" 77's = gauge .040 .060 .080 .100 are an option for a lighter flat. The Medium scale are .040 .050 .075 .090 so the "Hybrid" Long Scales are a little heavier.

Drop me a PM or an email through the website for any questions about quantity purchases. Please include location.

I invite anyone to go to the website and register and ask to be setup as a Forum VIP!
