I occasionally boil my strings. One time after removing and boiling I couldn't get rid of my stringS buzzing. So I replaced the strings with new ones and it worked fine.

it was kinda wierd, I looked it up in a guitar repair book and they said this is sometimes the cause of buzzing.

okay, if for some reason I DID want to boil the strings. How long should I boil them?

I boil 'em when I'm too broke for new ones, or waiting on strings to arrive in the mail (can't seem to find MTD's locally, which is a bummer because they are by far my favorite strings). I usually boil them in water with a bit of rubbing alcohol for about 15 or 20 minutes. Works good. The sound doesn't last as long but it's worth the effort. I'm fasincated by mchildree's method and will have to try that.

I've wiped down my strings w/ Stainless Steel Cleaner before. Made em bright again. Can find at most grocery stores.

I've got some denatured alcohol and 1" PVC laying around the house from various other projects. I might try that if I have time this weekend. Great idea
