String breaking issue

Sign in to disble this ad
Or at least it has the potential to become one. I've been playing bass for some 18 years and have never had this problem till recently.
About a month ago I broke my E string at a show. Thankfully it was the end of the night with only 5 songs left. I have a 5 string so I could still finish the night. The strings were DR Marcus Miller sig. series and they were about 4 months old.
I replaced them with Darcos (mainly because I was to broke to get better strings lol), Anyway, they are only about a month old and I broke the E on them too. Both broke at the saddle (and when I say broke, I mean the core broke and they came unwound).
I play on an old 97 Washburn. I checked the saddle for burs or anything that could cause it, but found nothing. We play primarily 440 dropped a half step.
Thats all the info I can think to give.

There's a sticky that says you need to check out a bunch of links before posting... and this is covered there. Could be a saddle spur, your playing style, or also the DR string construction because I have found unless those round core strings are installed perfectly they are bad about breaking.

I did a search but found nothing to match what my problem was. Not to say I overlooked one, I just didn't see it.
It's a bridge thru
I took it to a repair shop and he found the problem I seemed to have missed a bur on the saddle. I'm putting string savers on it to remedy the issue from happening again
