So I've been through various kinda of strings, started out with a mixed batch when I first started to learn until I settled on DRs, which have always served me well, you know, they do last for freaking ever and I find their brightness to last much longer than other brands I've tried (although admittedly not as extensively, D'Addarios, Ernie Balls, etc)..
When Elixir opened for business, I remember getting an invite for a free trial through my BP Mag subscription, and I ended up switching, and stuck with them for a long while..
And so it went until I abandoned my long scale basses and started looking for low tension strings (though by this point I'd gone back to DRs, I just thought they sustained better than Elixirs, but honestly my comparison was never totally fair since I was comparing medium gauge DRs to extra light Elixirs)..
I've really gotten onto the DR Sunbeams, but they cost an arm and a leg over her in Korea, if you can even find them. I have had no troubles using the long scale strings on my short scale Guild (ok, I guess it's more like 31" depending on the string, but still), but I recently found sets of Guild phosophor bronze acoustic short scale bass strings for so much cheaper than the cheapest set of Sunbeams I've found..
Any opinions on that? I use 45-105 Sunbeams, and these Guild sets are, I think, 45-98.. but they're like 1/3 of the price. I had to do a double take.
Anyone with experience with those strings? If they've got a silk core they won't do me much good, as I'm playing a
JS-II.. they're technically 'acoustic bass' strings for a short scale, but maybe they'll work?
Dunno.
