String core vibration

Sign in to disble this ad
I don't know if I'm sure about this. It seems that I have one string in a new set where it sounds like the core is vibrating inside the winding. I seem to notice that with the bass not plugged in.

Is that possible or has anyone ever had that happen?

Not as far as I know. It's supposed to be one unit and not rattle against the sides of the windings.

Are you sure the action on the neck is set properly?

Can you be more specific about the sound of the "core vibrating aagainst the winding?"

Does the vibrating string look normal?

This is on a Zon fretless so the action is very near perfect. The string looks normal. When I pluck the string with my finger I hear single knock but the string vibrates as normal. This is when the bass is unamplified. It is only the A string and none of the other strings on the bass exhibit this knock sound. I've noticed this before on other basses with different brands of strings.

I'm just wondering if in the process of winding the strings if it would be possible that there wasn't quite enough tension between the core and the windings.

There is absolute contact between the core and its immediate wrap - if there isn't its because the wrap wire has broken (very rare). Every wrap maintains perfect contact to its substrate - it is impossible for it not to based on how a string is built.

I would change the offending string with anything you have handy and see if it goes away. I am betting this is coming from someplace else.

I'll give that a try, thank you.

Report back - you have me curious.

And say Hi to Jake from Skip - I haven't seen him since NAMM.

I had a similar situation that was driving me nuts; turned out to be a loose straplock. Once tightened, the vibration was gone. I'd check stuff like that, because I could have sworn (at the time) that a string either a string core or trussrod was vibrating.

Make sure that the string fits in the nut.
