"A" String Dead?

Sign in to disble this ad
One P bass has a set of medium chromes that are over two years old. Just tonight I noticed a very irritating "owwww" sound coming from the A string. I tried it straight to the mixer and via a Radial ToneBone. No difference.
  • Doesn't seem to matter if it is open or fretted.
  • It does not seem to be hitting the frets.
  • Nothing feels loose.
  • The string is on pitch.
  • I pushed down the pickup but it doesn't seem to matter.

Here is a small clip of four open plucked notes on the E, A, and D strings: http://ftp.seanm.ca/bass/bad-a.mp3

Anybody had this happen? Has the string gone dead?
