String dilemma...

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a unique situation. In the music Iwrite, as I hear it in my head, the bass has a role in the music a little different than most music I hear these days....

To me, it serves the purpose of moving subwoofers, and making THICK deep bass. Simple.

I have knowledge of cabinet resonance frequencies, rolloff, etc, this isnt about that.

Iagine the sound of a 14th to 19th fret B or E string...the thick, smooth punchy bass. I like it up a little higher for fatness.

The PROBLEM....my latest project uses a baritone guitar, dropped to A. How to I get the range of thick warm bass lower on the neck? to the 10th 11, 12 fret? Strings seem to play a huge role...at the price, I can't experiment right now!!!

I imagine thicker is better....I have 50-128's on there now...ESP LTD 155, Active E.Q. I boost the low a bit for xtra boom, and play into a preamp/poweramp combo with a light rt hand technique(hard n heavy seems to SOUND... NOT hard n heavy to my ears!)

Do I move to a 130 set? Go to Nickel? Piano wire? Flats?(never played flats)

EQ seems to not be helping, as a 12 db increase at 110 hz only equates to around 3-4db perceivable change to us humans due to the weighting of our hearing.

ANY ADVICE is WELCOME!!

I just played the 14th-19th fret on the B and E strings. You want that all over, correct?

I'm going to say really heavy nickel rounds, and leave them on a while. Try Circle K Strings. He has some really heavy sets already made for you for down tuning.

Either that, or maybe a flat set like the heavy GHS Precision Flat set, five strings with the G thrown out. That set has a really deep and woody E and A string, although I don't know what it would be like downtuned. The 760FS La Bella set also is pretty fat and woody, too, with the optional B string you can buy separately.

Good luck.

Tune you bass F#-B-E-A or C#-F#-B-E with the appropriate gauge strings and you should be good to go.
