string gauge, tension, setup for short scale

Hey folks! I'm looking for thoughts on string selection for short scale, and any other tips/tricks thereof. I'm currently rocking D'addario chromes (the short scale set, .45-100), and their tension is pretty right-on IME. However, I recently tried some .45-100 DR hi-beams, and they were floppy as all getout! I knew I'd take a loss in tension, but this was unplayable. I've heard mention of having to use thicker gauge strings for short scale, and wondered if any of you have thoughts on safe benchmarks for gauges and tension, especially any recommendations for roundwounds you've had success with. Also, when manufacturers make strings that are specifically short scale, do they adjust tension as well to compensate? I'm unschooled in these matters.

How can I get my short scale to realize its potential?

I don't think even D'Addario publishes tension figures for other than 34" scale. But refer to their tension charts while thinking "DGCF"; 30.5" scale = EADG down-tuned a whole step then capo'ed on the 2nd fret. Doesn't hurt to search or follow some down-tuning threads; same issue, different phrasing.

Good point! Hadn't thought about that. I'll check it out and report back. Any other experience?

Not with <34. My Epi Viola came with normal length Chromes; I like their sound & it's not a main bass for me.

Some with low tension; 5 string 34" TIJFs. They took getting used to & I can see some techniques not liking them at all. I find them wonderfully expressive but can't say how much is tension & how much are the strings. I believe some posters herein find more expressiveness from lower tension than higher tension, which kinda makes sense to me.

No experience down- or drop-tuning.
