String Gauge and Tone question

Sign in to disble this ad
I can't seem to find good info on this. If I want to play bluegrass and jazz, and maybe some Beatles rock, what gauge is the best, and also flat or round? I'm thinking flat because I understand that flat lends itself to the clear jazz sound, and I also read that Paul used flats for Abbey Road and what not. But then my bigger question is how does gauge work out? All I can find is that the "heavier the gauge the fatter the tone". So is it still possible for me to achieve what I want with lights... or should I get heavies and if so, are they much harder to play. I have only ever used Rotosound Mediums on my bass (i dont get out much)

Flatwounds are naturally stiffer than rounds. I think you'll get the flatwound tone with any gauge.
