String gauges

Starting out learning how to play bass. When I check the tune with a Korg tuner the 3 &4 strings always need more tightening then you would think. I was wondering about getting a new set of strings and wondered if a higher gauge would help. The strings on this are about 4-5 years old round wound and this was never played in all that time. Should I look for a new set or what are your thoughts? My kids do claim they never touch this but you know how that goes.
Johnson 4 string Jazz Bass
Thanks in advance for any ideas and your time.

Dave,

I'd just play it and tune as needed. Since the strings are that old you may want to throw a new set on there (or not if you like the dead string thumpy sound), but I would bet that if they're slipping out of tune it's due to cheaper quality tuning pegs than the strings themselves.

How much you have to turn the tuner has nothing to do with the gauge.

Do you mean these 2 strings seem tighter than the others when in tune?
By 3 & 4 strings do you mean the lowest 2 strings EA or the highest 2 strings DG?

Old strings DO sometimes need more regular tuning- usually poorer quality ones. I've got 4 yr old rounds on my P bass & they stay in tune near all the time.
I'd get a new set anyway-quality strings- well known brand- D'addario are fine & not expensive, & keep the old ones as spare. See if the bass stays in tune after the new ones have been on the bass a few days.
