String Guage Nut Question!

Sign in to disble this ad
Couldn't find this on the forums but... I have a Fender Jaguar Bass, and the stock strings are .45,.65,.85,.105 and I'd like to know if my .46-.106 strings would fit the nut? or would I have issues with the nut?

Thanks just a bit worried, played bass for 5 years but I have never changed my bass strings.

You shouldn't have an issue woth so small an adjustment. My nut went from taking a .105 to a .132 and now to a .052. .105 to .106 is no great thing.

Thanks ummm but if I ever switch back to 45s-105s would it be okay?

Whoops! I forgot to also add that I'm worried about the setup for my bass haha

It wouldn't be a problem.

If you were going to move to a much higher gauge, you could have a luthier cut another nut for you and give you the old one, so it could be reinstalled if you go to back to a lighter gauge.

105 to 106 wouldn't require any setup adjustment, unless the string tension is different. Then the truss rod and/or action might need tweaking. This is easy to do yourself and there are plenty of videos out there on how to.

After measuring strings, I was surprised to see that they varied +/- .002" from what the manufacturer stated they were. There's a chance that your .105 is actually a .106 already.

In any case, .001 is completely unnoticeable with the naked eye, and your fingers wont feel the difference either.* Your nut can probably handle all the way up to about .115 before you'd have to worry about filing it.

*this doesn't take into account obvious differences felt from string construction.
