Your strings should be as high off the fretboard as you want them. As far as your neck being straight ( a different issue altogether), you either need a good tech or you need to search the many threads here regarding set-ups. Learn to do your own set-ups is my advice. Especially as a newbie on inexpensive gear.

You tell if the neck is straight by simply looking down it. If you see more then slight hint of upbow, might tweak it. If you see any sign of downbow, diff needs truss rod adjustment. if you have diff bow then Id striaghten the neck some.l As far as how high the strings are above the fret tops is personal preferance for action setup. As long as the strings arent fretting out, they are not to low. Of course with real low action your going to get some fret buzz. This isnt the same as fretting out and is concidered desireable tone add by many players.

The Strings actions is a consequence of what kind of bass sound you want to have but more important how is your approach on the bass, if your touch is gentle or hard :-)

Page 3 of the manual says 2.0 MM on the treble side and 2.5 on the bass side at the 12th fret. That will get you back to factory specs. Adjust from there for your liking. I prefer a little higher action myself.

Hope you got it all sorted out. But keep in mind, have the string height set where you are comfortable playing. Some like it low, some like it high... you gotta find what feels best to you and still allows the instrument to speak.

Its also best to do a "setup" with a new set of strings IMHO...
