String for High-fi Fretless Sound?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, new to the board. Have read a lot about the "best" string for fretless, but still am looking for a very specific sound and feel.
-Setup: Kinal neck through 35" 5 string. Alder body, Quilted top, Ebony board, ivory nut, hipshot bridge and tuners, bart 18v. Currently strung with what came on the bass (DR highbeam).

-As is the bass can be played to sound as if its not a fretless at all (could be good or bad). I want to bring out more character in the sound and enhance the "mwah" of the fretless. To give you an idea, the best feeling fretless I ever played was a rob allen, but was two uprighty sounding for me. I want that very flexible string feel, but still be able to exploit the full range of sound from the bass.. oh and not tear up the fret board like the DRs are currently doing

Please be specific: ie. what type, brand and even guage do you recommend and why? Am leaning toward trying the TI Jazz after reading so many rec. but am open to suggestions! THANKS!

EDIT: One last thing, will the regular 5 string TI Jazz Flatwounds be long enough for my bass? (35" scale and the strings are strung through the body).

Well, any round wound string is going to eat into the board, but rounds are the best way to get mwah and an ebony board should last a long time. That being said, I just put some nickel DR Sunbeams on my fretless Zon and they sound great. Nice warm, clear strings.

Exactly what I've experienced with DR strings on fretless. (Could be because of the 45-105 gauge, most other stings I've tried on my fretless were smaller)

Check out TI JazzROUNDS for maximum mwah. Since they have a very tight winding, they won't eat into the fretboard.
They have THE best bright mwah sound high up on the neck, but they could have better definition in the lower regions of the neck, so that's why I'm looking for something new. It's not that bad, really. They're still my recommondation for maximum mwah.

About the length: ...no idea, sorry. Just try.

I'd say either TI flats, because I've heard they're basically the best flatwounds out there (though I haven't tried them myself yet), or a black nylon tapewound string. With the tapewound strings you'll still get some of that hi-fi roundwound tone, but with a little more character and the silky smooth feel of the nylon tape covering. That's what I'd go for. Check out Status-Graphite's strings. They do tapewound strings that are the same gauge as regular roundwounds.

I second the recommendation for Sunbeams. They can sound very warm or very hi-fi depending on touch. I use them on my rosewood-boarded fretless and I don't see any excessive wear. The biggest factor is your touch. If you're chewing up an ebony board, you're probably playing too hard. Ease up on the neck a little and you should notice an improvement in tone and board life. Good luck.

Where would one get these strings? Will they work on my TRB5 (Yamaha)?

Groovin -

Just noticed also that the DR Highbeams are stainless steel strings which is probably why you are hearing it as almost not sounding fretless. They will also eat the board a little more as stainless tend to be more rough. The Sunbeams I suggested are nickel plated which will be warmer and softer to the touch. I've also used the standard D'Addario XLs. Great strings too.
