The common terminology (which goes back to at least 1973) is:
Short scale- 30"
Medium scale- 32"
Long scale - 34"
35" scales are probably best thought of as extra-long scale. And scale length refers ONLY to the distance from the nut to the bridge saddle (or more correctly, twice the distance from the nut to the 12th fret). It does NOT take into account the length needed from the ball-end to the saddle, nor the nut to the tuning machine.
D'Addario's long-scale will NOT fit a through-body 34" scale bass (and haven't since around 1989). My experience on my Laklands is that the Elixers didn't fit my 4-94s unless they were top-loaded, just like D'Addario long-scale. The D'Addario extra-long did fit the Lakland, as do DR, GHS, and of course Lakland strings. But that's all on a 34" Lakland strung through the body. Elixers and D'Addario regular long-scale (as well as TI) fit the Lakland 34" scale when top loaded.
However, on my Skyline 55-01, I've used DR Sunbeams, Lakland steels, and some Peavey stainless. They all fit through-body on the 35" scale. I'd suggest going over to The Lakland Owners' Group at
http://www.laklandowners.com/joomla/. There's a thread in there somewhere that's a list of strings that work on the 35" through-body basses.
