String/Neck Tension

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought a great [second] bass a few months ago.
I would like to restring it, but every time i've restrung my old one the neck tension's spasticated.
It could be a problem with the old bass, but I don't want it to happen with the new one.
Could anyone please tell me how i could avoid the neck tension messing up?
I take one string off, then put the new one on again, and I don't cut the old ones off.
I think i have the same gauge again.
Thanks. MB

Same gauge strings from different brands might have different tensions, due to differing core-wrap ratios and metallurgy. Get the exact same brand/type of string in the same gauge and you should be fine.

It doesn't hurt to learn how to do a setup either.

Unless you use the exact same brand and model string with the same gauge, a set up will be the order of the day. It is not difficult to learn and requires only a few tools and skills (as the saying goes, if I can do it, anyone can).
I find changing strings to be good for stress relief and a very theraputic experience, and often look for excuses (like trying out a new line or type of string) to do so. Many of my guitar/mandolin/bass playing friends have their strings changed and actions set by myself.

You're correct in doing one at a time. Learn how to do a "setup" - its simple once you know how plus you can set it up for your own preferences. Go to the "Setup" forum.
