String pitstops

Sign in to disble this ad
I know that most people here are looking for 1 "best" tone so this wouldn't apply.

With so much talk of boiling strings, not changing them, etc. .....

What about using the same 2/3 sets of strings on the same bass and swapping them depending on the tone required. Say, big rounds, small rounds, Flats. Racing drivers change tyres to suit the track conditions. What about string pit stops?

I love motor racing. But I have a hard time seeing myself changing strings a couple of times during a gig or session.
Simply takes to much time, even if you practice it as extensively as the Formula 1 pit crews.

Use different basses instead. Relieves GAS pains as well...

I meant BEFORE. Like if I'm working on a project I might be at that for a few weeks and then go on to something else.

Well, in that case, I see no harm. I have been switching between flats and rounds on my AV Jazz the past year.
Just watch the neck, different kinds of strings have different tension.

I'm not a big fan of reusing strings. Once I take them off, they're done.

I go with the mutliple bass method as described above, now I have flats on my P and rounds on everything else.

I agree generally. That what I did in the past but the inventory looks like:
P bass,
The fretted 5 string,
The fretless 5 string with rounds,
and I just need to buy a new Fretless 5 string for flats.

Lot of polishing though
