String Question - Soft and Flexible

Sign in to disble this ad
OK - maybe this will sound a little strange, but.....
I've been playing bass for about a year and trying a lot of different strings to find out which ones I like best. I still haven't found what I am looking for and thought the folks here might have some ideas. I've had the opportunity to play some basses in stores and have on a couple of occasions found strings that I would call "extra flexible" and soft. What I mean by flexible is that when you fret the string it seems to bend down into the fret very easily. These strings also seem to have a softness to them. Usually these are a nickel string. I hope that makes some sort of sense. Typically the people in the stores don't know what kind of strings are on the basses and haven't been able to help. I've tried GHS Boomers, D Addarios, DR Red Devils, DR Sunbeams and Elixirs but haven't found the "feel". The only one that I know of that had this "feel" was a set of Godins on a Godin bass. Does anyone have any suggestions? or am I nuts and need to get back on my meds? Thanks!

They are a little expensive, but the Thomastic Infeld Jazz Rounds have exactly these qualities. Another string that I feel has the qualities, but to a sligtly lesser extent than the TI Jazz rounds, are DR Hi-Beams. Those are a stainless steel string though.

TI Flats and TI Rounds are "soft" and TI Super Alloys a little "softer" than most rounds. i like them all, but right now SA's are my favorite. but, if you like that Stainless Steel "bite", these aren't for you. these strings are varying degrees of mellow.

Sounds exactly like TI Jazz Rounds are what you're looking for. I recently put a set on my Ken Lawrence, and I'm officially a convert to these strings (used DR strings before). They have a lighter gauge so they're real low tension. Plus the (nickel) roundwound wraps are smaller than most strings, so they feel much softer.

Going out to see if I can find a set of the TI's tommorow. Thanks for all the input!
And nice to know I wasn't totally crazy!

Another vote for TI Jazz Rounds.

I had them on my Sterling and they were too mellow sounding but man, they felt like buttah. I'll use them another time when I need a mellow-but-not-quite-flats feel.
