String Questions

Ok, I've been looking at string replacements for both my basses (a Schecter Stiletto 5 and a Fender MIM P-Bass), and I think I've narrowed down the things I want in strings for each. The problem is, I really don't know the first thing about string buying. I'm still using the stock strings on the Schecter, and I don't even remember what I have on my Fender. On the Fender, I'd like to switch to flats; I had a set of flats on it for a while, and I dug the feel and tone they gave it, but when they broke I switched back to rounds. I've heard a lot of good things about TI flats, but I've also heard that they can be a bit floppy, which is not good, considering I like my basses with the strings pretty close to the fretboard. I want to switch from a BEADG tuning on my Schecter to a EADGC tuning, as I find that I run out of room more often on that side of the bass and I don't really need the added low notes. On that note, I'm looking for something that has a smooth, mid-rangey tone, not too much *thump thump* or *click clack* if you guys get what I'm saying. I was thinking roundwound, since I do a bit of slapping, and based on what I've read, a nickel string would probably be best. As I said earlier, I like the strings pretty close to the fretboard, but I hate that string-on-fretboard "clack" you get with some strings, so I'd like something that'll stay fairly taught, especially with a lighter gauge. Also, I've read that people shifting from EADG tuning to BEAD tuning have to get new nuts to accommodate the shift; would the same rule apply for shifting from BEADG to EADGC?

TL;DR: I'd like decent flats for my four string Fender P-Bass, and I'd like to get nickel rounds for a EADGC tuned 5 string. I'd also like to know if I'll need a new nut to accommodate the shift from BEADG to EADGC.

Thanks,
CopiusX

Go to www.juststrings.com

Get a 4 string set of DR Sunbeams for the Schecter (for the EADG) .045-.100

http://www.juststrings.com/drs-nmlr-45.html

...and then order a single Sunbeam (for the C) .030 guage

http://www.juststrings.com/drs-sbn-30.html

Sunbeams are bright, but not overly so and maintain that brightness for a long time. They are nickel roundwounds. Best roundwounds I've found. Although they are not the brightest roundwound, as bright as they are they maintain that sound the longest.

Get a 4 string set of D'Addario Chromes for the P-Bass from juststrings too.

I know ghs makes a set that comes with the standard 4 and a high c. Can't remember what they are made of or where you can buy them off the net though.

Try Labella Flats or Pyramid Gold flats (my favorite) for your P bass. Your right TI Flats are lower tension

I'm using Rotosound Jazz Bass 77's Heavy Gauge flats on my H1 Jazz. If you want deep & full, try 'em - I love them. Awsome for blues rock.
