String recommendation for a Jerry Jones 6

Sign in to disble this ad
My brother gave me a Jerry Jones 6 stringer. It looks like a Danelectro copy. Looking at the J Jones website I believe it's a Neptune Longhorn Bass6.

As the title says I'm looking for replacements. It's tuned E to E like a six string geetar (24-34-44-56-72-84)

Was wondering if there is a set so I could tune it BEADGC without damaging the neck?

Wow! I had no idea they cost this much!! Whatta nice 'lil bro! Now I'm srry I used to beat the crap outta him. No fair -- he gets even with guilt

There are no BEADGC sets for the Jones/Dano 6 string bass. Using a regular B to C set will most likely warp the neck beyond repair.

I have the Danelectro version of this bass and the E to E set is really all it's designed to handle.

Anyway, the thickness of the strings on a BEADGC set would probably leave little space between the strings and make it very akward to play.....

Thanx for the reply ONYX. Yeah, the neck seems kind of delicate. OK OK. I'll string it as a geetar. What strings are you using or recommend for this bass?

Also, is this what is called a tic-tac bass? It's a fun little bass. My guitar playing buddies like it because the scale is so small + the tuning. I find it a tad difficult to play - my fingers tend to lumber all over it

Sorry for the delayed response--I've been too busy to turn my computer on!!

D'addario makes strings for this bass. You can find them on "www.juststrings.com". They'll be listed as 6 string Danelecto or Jerry Jones 6 string under the electric bass section. They only come in one gauge so you won't have much of a choice.

The term "tic-tac" goes back to the 60's when it was used to double the upright bass lines on country music records. (Check out some of the Patsy Cline recordings.) Other than that, I really don't know where the term originated from.

If you need ideas for playing this type of bass, listen to The Cure recordings. Although Robert Smith used a Fender Bass VI and not a Dano, (they are tuned identically), you'll get the picture.
